4Wouldn’t former all star McCann interest the Angels more than the untried rookie who might just be another question mark at the position?
The White Sox seem to be the only organization that still believes Collins can become an MLB catcher. FanGraphs has listed him as a 1B for two years now.
It may seem like a minor deal that doesn't warrant much fanfare but I think it makes some sense for both sides. Chicago has Yaz locked up for the next four seasons (with McCann in tow as well), Jose Abreu to occupy the DH slot over a similar timeframe, and Andrew Vaughn likely cemented at 1B for the foreseeable future. That leaves little room for a near ready C/1B type like Collins to see any significant playing time. The catching situation in Anaheim is nearly the exact opposite. With no true commitment beyond this season and no notable prospects in the system Collins would have every opportunity to stick behind the plate. Reports are pessimistic on his glovework but even if he doesn't come around there's not much in his way at 1B. Anderson helps the White Sox BP immediately and, with 5yrs of control remaining, could be an anchor down the line.
I think the long term potential of Collins outweighs the short term contributions of McCann. The Halos have Castro to cover 2020 and the hope would be that Collins could step in afterwards
