2I don't see this on the Reds standpoint, giving up your best relief pitcher, top young prospect, top MILB Prospect for Seager and another righty... then Reds have to right handed arm all for Seager.
My thinking on the reds perspective would be that it’s a win now type of move and this move would significantly help the reds in that goal. They would massively improve the club at SS by adding Seager who’s projected to add 8-10+ WAR over his 2 yrs of control. They would improve quite a bit at C by adding 2 years of Austin Barnes. Fangraphs projected WAR Barnes 1.3 fWAR in 211 plate apps. Barnhart 0.7 fWAR in 352 PA’s Casali 0.6 fWAR in 243 PA’s The reds would also dramatically improve their bullpen. Going from Garrett to Kolarek is a downgrade but it’s a much smaller one than most realize. Adding Barnes & Kolarek while subtracting Garrett is a pretty large net gain to the bullpen as a whole. Garrett era+ was 142 in 56 inn in 2019 4.14 FIP/1.41WHIP Kolarek era+ was 135 in 55 inn in 2019 4.27 FIP/1.16WHIP Barnes era+ was 128 in 61 inn in 2019. 15.5 SO9/3.28 FIP/1.38WHIP Garrett has 4 yrs of control. Kolarek has 5 yrs of control. Barnes has 2 yrs of control.
