The Mets would never do that. Trade a promising rookie starter in Peterson and another good pitching prospect in Smith just to dump salary? When they badly need pitching depth and probably still need Familia in the pen anyway? Just wouldn't make sense.
Another bad contract trade for the Giants. With ownership in flux for the Mets, it makes sense that they would want to dump salary as much as possible. The only 'blue-chip' prospect is Peterson, and he's more floor than ceiling. Smith is a control lefty with some swing-and-miss, and should profile nicely as a long reliever. Mets have no upper minors outfield prospects, so they somewhat shore it up in Fabian, who still has power potential, and McCarthy, who has value and could become a fourth OF. On the business side, the Mets pay for a quarter of Familia's contract.
I really don't see the logic for the Mets. Their 2021 rotation right now is deGrom and four question marks. Hard to justify trading two potential 2021 starters just to save a little money and add some meh OF prospects. Near-term, the rotation is much more of a need for the Mets than the outfield, and Familia's contract isn't bad enough to where you'd have to make a sacrifice like this to move it.
The Mets want to dump salary, which is the whole point of the trade. If you want, you'd have to give up a highly rated bat instead.
Do they really want to cut payroll now? The wanted to over the winter when they were trying to build the 2020 team. But then they cut the guaranteed money for Cespedes by about about $23m. And then Covid happened, and both Cespedes and Stroman left, saving them more money this year. But I haven't seen anything recently to indicate that they're in cut mode.
