Diaz had a very good 2020 season. 17.5 K/9, 1.75 ERA and 6SV in 26 appearances. This move would be a good one if the Mets are talking about rebuilding... but with Lugo almost certainly in the rotation for 2021, this is not a move that a team on the rise with division title aspirations would make.

It depends on how you view Diaz. 2020 was a short season and he did lose his closer job during it. He only converted six saves too. Which is the real Diaz? 2019 Diaz or 2020 Diaz? It’s hard to say, some people aren’t convinced he can pitch in New York. The Mets could definitely replace Diaz’s spot through free agency right now. And his value may be at its highest now. This offseason might be the last chance the Mets have to salvage the Kelenic trade. And it isn’t a rebuilding move. All three of those pitchers are relatively close to the minors. The Mets have a very thin pitching depth in the upper minors. This trade could fix that and you could see all three of those guys appear at some point next year theoretically. It’s unlikely that Diaz will be traded but it’s an interesting idea IMO, and apparently the Mets were open to it at the deadline last year. Also Lugo is not at all certain to be in rotation this year. That’s very much up in the air and I bet the Mets would prefer him in the pen.
