7Admittedly I'm not a Yankees fan, but I just do not see how in the world Torres is valued at over $70M. The dude has no business manning SS, and probably wouldn't for any other team. He's that bad in the field. Plus, his offensive numbers are inflated by playing in a glorified little league park for 1/2 his games. I just don't see him as a valuable trade chip, and would reject this trade as a result.
We've just started the process of updating the values, and we've just downgraded Torres (to 57.1). It's a methodical process, and the sample sizes are still small this year, so each month they'll get a bit more meaningful.
John - I appreciate that, but my overall point is that I don't think Torres is that good a player. He's awful in the field, to the point where I'm not sure I'd even want him to play 2B. Offensively, his numbers look great on the surface, but take away the Yankee Stadium little league park and his numbers are a lot less impressive (aside from 2019, which now looks like a one off). Away Stats 2021 - .176/.333/.235 (.569 OPS) 2020 - .194/.318/.347 (.665 OPS) 2019 - .280/.344/.527 (.871 OPS) 2018 - .238/.335/.431 (.765 OPS) His wRC+ has been well above average in his first 3 years in the league (so there is that), but if the above numbers were his overall numbers, he'd have a valuation similar to Swanson (who has similar numbers), but at least Swanson can play defense adequately. Is Torres better than Swanson? Probably. Is he 4 times better? Not for my money. Anyway, I am sure I am in the minority on my views of Torres (he's a Yankee after all, which means he must be good), but I just don't see him as that great a player. I certainly wouldn't give up nearly $60M trade value to get him.
I don't disagree subjectively. But he also has four years of cheap control and is still only 24, which means his best years are probably still ahead of him. Trusting the model on this one.
So who is getting the biggest adjustments up and down right now? I saw Glas got a decent bump, along with Wendle.
We started with leaders and laggards from the Fangraphs leaderboard. Bryant got a bump up, Baez moved down. We'll go over some of the early movers on the next podcast and probably in an article next week.
Bryant does look like he's planning to have a monster contract year.
