3Twins kick in half of Donaldson's remaining salary to keep the Mets under the luxury tax and the Twins get some lottery ticket arms in return. Duffey is a sweetener.
The Twins had the money to sign Donaldson and take on his contract. I can't see any way they part with him and get garbage in return plus kick in cash. I believe the Twins are looking ahead to next year and think this year is an anomoly.
Just realized Reyes is 28 years old, and not so much of a "lottery ticket." Substitute in someone who fits that description better.
