6This makes sense to me, though I feel like any Athletics trade is going to involve them receiving cash. (Not sure if that's a fair assumption.)
I don't think the A's would include Wendelken. Their bullpen is thin enough and they're shopping for arms in addition to an offensive upgrade.
Cruz would be due roughly 5M for the remainder of the season. Maybe 1-2 million gets thrown back to Oakland, but geez, if they are really going to nickel-and-dime teams over a couple million, then I think they'll have a hard time making necessary upgrades. Anything more going back to Oakland would require greater prospect capital, which isn't what you want to trade when you're a massive cheapskate.
Expecting Oakland's ownership to be cheap is like expecting to get wet when you fall out of a boat. Sometimes you stay dry but on those rare occasions it tends to hurt more.
If they are THIS cheap, I can't envision many deals getting done, at least not any that catch the Astros. I guess they can market the excitement of a 1-game Wild Card!!!
I'm guessing here... I don't think there's any money until after the July 20 City Council vote. If Howard Terminal gets the OK then there is a scenario where Fisher puts spending money into the trade coffers. If the vote fails then it's probable the FO pays the prospect freight to get cash back as part of any upgrade.
