8This is if the A's move Olson and Chapman. Smith fills in for departed Olson, Davis and Mcneil help with 3rd base/DH/OF Mets fill 3rd base till Baty, Vientos is ready.
This is both great value for the A’s and presumably not what they’ll be looking for in any trade return. Trade looks to be salary neutral - if the A’s deal Chapman, it will almost certainly involve cutting the entirety of his salary from the payroll. Too bad too, definitely a good fit from an on-field perspective, even if they weren’t to move Olson.
Down vote for the A's. If Oakland has to get under $40 MM in payroll then they can't take back these salaries. I'd also say that anyone who says Davis could help cover 3B clearly isn't a Mets fan.
I'd say you clearly ignore the fact of inconsistent playing time or the fact that he played with a hurt hand, you know the thing a player uses to field? Mets fans tend to hate over nothing, I believe people like that aren't really Met fans just asswipes who want to take their anger out on people.
Davis wasn't any good at 3B when healthy and given the playing time. He's not a good or even average defensive 3B. That was the book on him coming up through the Houston org and it's been the same since becoming a Met. And his biggest problem isn't his hands, it's his lead feet, so I don't see how a hand injury can be used as a mitigating factor here. Guy rakes, though.
I don't think he'll ever be a "Good defensive" 3rd basemen, I do think he could develop into an average one with the A's away from the microscope of NY. The Mets Contracts in this deal add up to 9million for 3 players (meaning 3x550k would be 1.1 million in roster spot savings for MLB min) So it's a minimal savings, however it does give the A's flexibility to make other moves that save them more money without so much hurting the MLB roster, and stocking up on prospects. IE Olson for prospects, Manea etc. If the A's would rather have a midlevel prospect instead of Smith I'm sure the Mets would be willing to do so. The idea is a trade that gives a main framework of a deal. Davis is valuable to the A's for flexibility and hitting potential, Mcneil fits perfectly for them and is under control for 4 more years at cheap value. Chapman is an ideal trade candidate for the Mets due to their hole at 3rd. Whether this exact deal would be the one or not, to say it's a shit deal like the person above said is moronic, over salary circumstances. Given that nobody in this deal is a bad contract and all are Pre-arb/early arb or arb.
I don't share your hope on Davis' defensive potential. Oakland's current 2022 payroll commitment is approximately $87 MM. Bassitt, Chapman, Olson, Manaea, Montas count towards $46 MM of that commitment. Rosenthal is reporting that owner John Fisher is telling Beane he has to plan on a $40 MM payroll for the upcoming season. If Oakland can trade the 5 players I mentioned and replace them with league-minimum earners... the team will still be about $4 MM over budget. If $40 MM is the real payroll figure then the team can't take back multi-million dollar contracts when they trade their best players.
I agree salary is a bit off. Might theory is A's deal Olson for prospects dumping his salary, than deal Chapman here for multiyear players in ARB. Basically filling the roster, expanding their window and dump salary.
