3Alvarez is still in A ball and years away. The Reds a pretty happy with Farmer at SS and love Stephenson behind the plate. I doubt they would ever make this trade.
The Reds just acquired Alvarez from the Mets as their future catcher so they can trade Stephenson for a great prospect. At this point they have Alvarez, Orelvis Martinez and now Volpe. This is a great start to the rebuild. The Yankees have Peraza in AAA and Vargas in the complex league. They will also sign the # international prospect tomorrow which will also be a SS. One or two of these four can be traded.
That comment tells you just how sad the Reds are and the low expectations Reds fan's have. There are 30 SS in the majors who had a WAR of at least 1.6 last year. Farmer had a WAR of 1.6 last year. That means 29 other SS had a WAR at least equal to Farmer. When you are happy with the performance of the 30th best SS it is sad. Furthermore I know Alvarez is in A ball. But my 8 trades mean punting 2022 and 2023. Then being competitive in 2024 and by 2025 they should be one of the best teams in baseball. More talented than the Dodgers and Yankees. Look at the Reds in the majors in 2024 (fangraph prospect rating in ()) C: Alvarez (60) 1B: Votto (50 when he was a prospect), 2B: Senzel (55 when he was a prospect) SS: Volpe (55) 3B: Martinez (55) LF: Adell (60 when he was a prospect) CF: Pages (50) RF: McLain (45) Bench:, Suarez, Schrock, TJ Friedl and Matheu Nelson Pitching: Here are 9. I have no idea who will start and who will relieve but very deep. Greene (50), Lodolo (50), Balazovic (50), Winder (45), Bello (40+), Mata (45+), Bobby Miller (45+), Ashcraft (40) and Bryce Bonnin (40). And by 2026 McLain is the only starter not to be rated 50 or more. He would be incredible as the #9 hitter. Additionally 8 SP are higher rated prospects than McLain. McLain as our 15th - 20th best prospect is pretty good. C: Alvarez (60) 1B: De La Cruz (50) 2B: Mayer (55) SS: Volpe (55) 3B: Martinez (55) LF: Adell (60 when he was a prospect) CF: Pages (50) RF: McLain (45) Bench: Hinds (45), Vera (45), Austin Hendrick (45+), Jay Allen (40+), Callihan (45), Schrock, TJ Friedl and Matheu Nelson (Vellojin and Jackson are other catchers). Greene (50), Lodolo (50), Balazovic (50), Mick Abel (60), Mata (45+), Bobby Miller (45+), Gunner Hoglund (NR but at least 45+), Yeondrys Gomez (45+), Winder (45), Andrew Painter (45), Roa (40+), Van Eyk (40+), Bello (40+), Ashcraft (40), Bryce Bonnin (40), Boyle (35+), Thomas Farr (NR) and Abbott (NR)
