7Unlikely the Mariners part with Raleigh and leave their catching to Murphy and Torrens. Seems like a questionable fit for the Reds too, but I value a second catcher more than most, especially if the DH comes to the NL and opens up some more PAs for Stephenson. Still assume there would be another offer out there for Gray that checks more boxes for the Reds.
Hey, Jurdson Were you aware the Reds signed Andrew Knapp to a minor league contract with an invite to ST (when and if that happens). He looks to me like a pretty good b/u catcher option. Doesn't hit a lot, but can has MLB experience calling games. He's a switch hitter who can fit in when Stephenson takes a day or plays another position. He was with the Phillies (who drafted him in 2013) last year and batted .152. Probably didn't get much work behind Realmuto.
You make some good points. Would it be better with an upgrade? If you've been following other trades submitted, I certainly favor their doing so. Good catchers are just not moving much. No one seems to want to part with one. I agree that Knapp isn't going to contribute much (at all) offensively. Let him catch 1xwk and go ohfer, Farmer can also catch, if needed. IMO the Reds have larger needs, but take a good option if it presents itself.
From my perspective, it would be worth it to find an upgrade. Can you imagine the black hole that would exist if Stephenson got injured for an extended period? I'm not saying go get a star, just someone who is at least major-league caliber. Knapp is best suited as an emergency guy you stash at AAA, along with Okey and Kolozsvary. The issues are what you said- those guys are hard to come by (they'd have better luck trying to get Torrens, McGuire, or better yet, see what it would take to pry Campusano away from the Padres); and secondly, that they have so many other holes to try to plug (currently from my view, CF, a decent RH platoon guy for Naquin in RF, LHRP, and whatever SP hole they might create by trading one of their 3 good starters).
Jurdson, We are on the same page with the assessment of pressing needs. IMO securing a strong RH Cof option is important, as both Winker in LF and Naquin in RF are LH hitters. I've submitted several options over the past two months (Adell - Halos; Gurriel - Jays; Ramos - Giants, for example). Trading only Gray from the current rotation should secure a high quality option. The LHRP is very important IMO, a platoon of Senzel and Friedl in CF could work, if the Reds can secure the RF option. I don't place much value on Aquino or Akiyama to contribute. I'm hearing good things about Lodolo being fully healthy now. If that's accurate, I think he can backfill the Gray trade. Have a good rest of your weekend, Jurdson!
Right on, you too!
I am aware, but he is just terrible. He's entering his age-30 season, has all of 827 PAs to his name, with an OPS+ of 71. All told, it's a package that's added up to a grand total of -.7 WAR (notice the negative sign there!). If that's their backup catcher, they better hope Stephenson can catch 180 games.
