10Reds are not likely to trade Tyler Mahle; they are even less likely to diminish his trade value by including a bad contract (Moustakis) in the trade, and this trade doesn't include there primary need - OF help.
Jays round out their rotation pushing Stripling back to 6th starter spot. Also keep Pearson in their system to start the year at AAA as #1 SP. As well as adding breakout candidate/LH bat who could platoon with Espinal at 3B. Reds add: Future 3B Groshans High upside rarely healthy Merryweather #5 AAAA starter Thornton + Saucedo who probably becomes a MLB 6th/7th lefty reliever.
Yeah but you're basically saying: "Reds part with good starting pitcher, receive nothing of value in return." People keep wanting to send the Reds Groshans, who should not be a headliner in a Mahle trade, and who the Reds do not need at all. Gotta agree with Challenger again, this is bad for the Reds on all fronts except saving ownership money. By the way, no offense here- I put together trades all the time that I know aren't going to work just to see how things could play out. I'll just never be able to thumbs-up a trade where the Reds attach a bad contract and ruin their return.
None taken. Groshans/Merryweather I'm not sure are nothing. Groshans IMO skips ahead of a few INF guys in the Reds minor league system. Merryweather is a guy who you just root for to figure out how to stay healthy. Thornton/Saucedo are arms. Can never have too many of those. But I agree they are less than promising. But I fully understand/appreciate the criticism. I'm here for the conversations as well.
Yup I completely forgot about India... Which is crazy because I picked him up end of May last year in my fantasy league and it might be one of my best mid season pick ups ever. You're right these teams just might not lineup. But if I'm the Jays I'm giving the Reds my best offer on 1 of either Castillo or Mahle. (ideally nothing from the MLB 26 man) If they pass they pass. Gray doesn't intrigue me at all.
I agree this is less than likely. It does save the Reds a lot of money this year and next however. Which might not address the OF need directly but could create other options entirely. The "moderate overpay" 5m value is how I attempted to address the diminished Mahle value. Quantity over Quality. Maybe adding a guy like Palacios is what swings this deal more into the Reds favor and gets a deal done.
Maybe Reds have two pretty good 3B options in the pipeline in Hines and De la Cruz. Others are redundant.
Groshans probably isn't sticking at SS but he could move to 2B too if that makes more sense. Would be a waste of his arm though from what I hear. I'm not gonna pretend I know much about the Reds minor league system just from a couple lists online.
Reds have ROY Jonathan India at 2B too. He's pretty good.
You probably do know the Reds 2B is Jonathan India, NL ROY. It’s okay if Reds aren’t a good fit for Jays in a trade. Groshans is a good start, and Gurriel as a strong OF addition would work. Drop Moustakis as his deficit is too high for this trade. Gray, not Mahle would need to be your SP target, IMO.
