7Cubs fans would love to trade their collection of 30 year old one year wonders (Ortega, Wisdom and Schwindel), but who is going to bite? I doubt it's the Rays, and I really doubt the Rays will trade Walls for any of them.
The Ray's like those type of guys. They always have. A guy who puts it together and has a few hot years that they never have to pay. Yandy was like that. It's about money. Plus Amaya is a top 3 catching prospect and they need catching prospects
Except that Yandy Diaz was only 27 years old when the Rays acquired him and he'd had 2 promising years in the Majors before being acquired (plus success in the minors). I don't think the Rays are in the market for upper minors catching talent, but I have no problem with Amaya if the Rays want him.
That's the definition of a prospect....they are in the minors! Of course they want top catching talent. The higher they are in the minors the more likely they will stick.
I don’t understand your comment. I was saying I didn’t think the Rays were in the market for upper minors catchers because they seem really high on R.Pinto and F.Proctor (both AAA and on the 40 man), have Zunino and Mejia at the Major League level and have defensive stud B.Hunt in AA. They are pretty stocked at the catcher position right now in the Majors and upper minors. Maybe not high profile names, but the types of catchers the Rays like. But if the Rays like Amaya and trade for him, then that’s cool too. I’m not saying Amaya isn’t a good prospect.
The Ray's were the ones last offseason who put out the call for catchers at each level. They then had a historically bad performance by their catchers. The one they received in trade cannot hit....they are still looking for a top catcher. Amaya would be the best of them all.
What are you talking about? Zunino and Mejia were arguably the best catching tandem in baseball last year, with a 4.5 fWAR and 1.4 fWAR, respectively. They also provided above average framing and defense collectively. In the minors, R.Pinto was so good last year (125 wRC+) that he was added to the 40 man despite being a minor league free agent who was nowhere near top 30 lists at the beginning of last year. Rays wouldn't have done that if they didn't think very highly of him. Proctor is only about 2 years into his training as a catcher, having been a SS/2B his whole career. He has done so well in that transition that he was also added to the 40 man (and he's been on top 30 lists). Then there is Blake Hunt, who is universally regarded as the Rays' best defensive catcher. His bat is still developing, but he already has the skill set the Rays demand the most in their catchers. Not that any of this matters in regards to your trade proposal. I have no objection to the Rays trading for Amaya. I just don't think it's likely.
