5Reasons why the A's aren't interested in Patrick Bailey: Sean Murphy, Shea Langeliers, Tyler Soderstrom. Reasons why the A's aren't interested in Aeverson Arteaga: Nick Allen, Max Muncy The Second, Robert Puason.
I mean - sure - but Soderstrom is definitely not sticking at C and Murphy is as good as gone by 2024. Also - Nick Allen is basically it. Pauson can't even break rookie ball right now and Muncy doesn't look like much after his first pro-ball season (nor is he climbing any prospect boards).
https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/athletics-tyler-soderstrom-makes-progress-behind-the-plate/ "When Tyler Soderstrom arrives at spring training, there will be one big difference: No one will be debating whether he has a future as a catcher." He'll do just fine cycling through 1B/DH/backup catcher. And you forgot Shea Langeliers, who'll take Murphy's spot. A's don't need catchers, and if they want to improve middle infield it's going to be someone more valuable (and closer to the bigs) than Arteaga.
That's good news regarding Soderstrom and it's great to read about the leaps and bounds he's making - but that's not indicative of where he'll eventually play. A guy with a plus-plus hit tool is probably not the guy risking the wear and tear that occurs from being behind the plate (especially if Langeliers really is the guy they want there post-rebuild. He's a much, much better defensive backstop at this juncture). I'm not saying you're wrong regarding Soderstrom/Langeliers and Bailey. I'm just saying that it's not the worst idea to have a surplus of riches at a position that's league-wide pretty bad right now. The A's are a couple of seasons out from being relevant again and there really isn't an SS in the system that's penciled in as the 'future' (source: I am an A's fan). Arteaga provides options and depth at a position that's currently Nick Allen or bust.
My point is: if they're going to target a middle IF return for Montas or Manaea, they can do better both in short-term and long by *upgrading* from Nick Allen rather than backfilling underneath him ... but they seem pretty set on Allen bumping Andrus to the bench mid-season after his Olympics performance. Arteaga is years away from action, having played ONE SINGLE GAME at A-ball level before this last week, while Nick Allen is 95% ready in Vegas.
