6 years of control for a young offensive catcher to the Sox. Brewers need an elite bat for the playoffs.

Martinez is making just short of $20M. Stearns isn't going to spend that kind of money on a rental and give away a good prospect. Maybe at the trade deadline where the cost would be down considerably.

jmont1, you need a small math lesson. If they completed this trade in late July, the cost would be around 5 million. Other teams would be willing to make a similar move for a power hitter who has been very good this year. You are right; the Brewers are cheap, but it would not be an all-in move.

No question about that, this trade is a deadline deal for sure. The Brewers have already hit their top payroll mark in franchise history, but they are one elite bat from being a true WS contender. Cutch just isn't producing in the DH role and as much as I love Hiura's improvements so far this year, the Brewers need another impact bat. The cost is high for a 3 month rental (Aug, Sep and Oct) but the benefits could be huge. The Brewers will also likely need to trade for a reliever, because you can't have enough of those during the stretch run.

queenkid: if you took a math lesson yourself you would see if the trade was done today, it would cost the Brewers around $10.5M plus a good prospect. I said this was a maybe IF done around the trade deadline where the cost would be considerably less.
