6Hi this is Baseball Fanatics 1.2 and this is the very first trade I've made. If your wondering why this trade. Let's be honest the Mariners won't make the playoffs this year, they haven't since 2001 and the team this year is 6 games below .500 with teams like the Blue Jays, Astros and Padres coming up next month and some harder teams in August and September. Also I don't think anyone stands a chance at dethroning an AL East team besides the Orioles from a Playoff spot. The reason why I've put the Mariners total value lower than the Braves is so the Braves are more likely to do the trade. The Braves would sacrifice A.J Minter how has been really good this year, but Paul Sewald is still a really good bullpen reliver with team control through 2024. Michael Harris II is a risk to take, but I think he will be good. MLB.com estimated his Major League appearance would be 2023, but the Braves were confident he was ready and his first taste of the big leagues has been excellent. I don't know how much longer he will keep this up, but he's off to a good start. Now Jarred Kelenic hasn't been good, but he's only 22, he has plenty of time to develop. Maybe the Mariners don't know how to develop him. I'm sure the Brave could easily develop and make him good, this is the same team that made superstars like Freedie Freeman, Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley. I'm sure it's easily possible for them to make Kelenic good and if Kelenic doesn't work out, you still get the Mariners number 10 prospect, Zack DeLoach. He's not the greatest hitter, but he can play outfield and how knows, the Braves could make him good. Toro could help the Braves because he's a utility player, he can play different positions. He has 8hr, although his bat hasn't been too good this year, but he could give your starters a little bit of extra time to rest if they need a day off. He also has speed, he can switch hit and is making peanuts, this would be a nice player for Atlanta to have. This trade isn't really a step down for the Mariners because Michael Harris is only 21 and still has plenty of time to get even better. Also the Braves would want to contend now rather than later. Okay if there is anything you don't like about this trade, please comment below I would love to hear more than just my opinion on this trade.
Harris has been helping the Braves win. Kelenic isn't playing as well as Harris What could be the reasoning for playing Kelenic over Harris right now? Same point to make regarding Minter and Sewald. The Braves aren't making this trade even if they are getting more value, overall. It doesn't work that way. I see no motivation for either team to make this trade. DeLoach is prospect depth. I like Drew Waters better and therefore DeLoach is even less valuable for the Braves, in my eyes. I'm in on Abraham Toro, but he'd be behind Riley and Albies. So I'm sticking with Arcia as a stopgap right now and passing on Toro for the Braves. I'd rather have a INF depth that can hold down SS anyways.
Sure Kelenic is one year older than Harris, but you have to consider, Kelenic was at one point an extreme top 100 prospect. I agree that trading Minter for Sewald does sound weird, maybe replace him for Swanson in the deal, would make it more worth it. Swanson has a really good ERA and has been the best bullpen pitcher for the Mariners he also costs the team peanuts. I did say this, but the Braves I'm sure could easily fix Jarred Kelenic. Thanks for sharing your opinion on this trade it helped me understand other opinions about trading and I'll try to improve my trades in the future. I just don't see the Mariners making the playoffs this year, so I thought trading some of these players would be a good idea for the future. If this trade does happen the Mariners would have some really young outfielders and a good bullpen reliver and I know Jerry Dipoto (Mariners GM) s trying to go for a team with tons of Young Talent.
No to Erik Swanson. He shouldn't throw at Mike Trout's head. Kelenic is good. He was a first round draft pick in 2018 for the Mets. He hasn't been good in the Majors. Harris has. Harris has been better than Kelenic in AAA this year, and really, Harris might have a shot at a ROY vote or two. Kelenic?
That's true too. I'm curious, if you were to create a Mariners-Braves trade, who would you trade to the Braves and what would the Mariners get in return. Sure Swanson did throw a pitch at Trout's head (which sucks) but his stats are really good. You are correct about Harris doing way better than Kelenic. I think Harris has a shot at NROY but I don't think he has a shot at being the ROY. Rookies like Julio Rodriguez, Bobby Witt Jr, and Jeremy Pena have played since the beginning of the season, so they've played over 60 games while Michael Harris has played around 27 games. I hope Kelenic gets better because he had so much potential, but I think the Mariners could get something good if they trade him, besides he's only 22 so he still has some time to fix himself.
I recently posted a Mariners/Braves trade proposal that has Kelenic going to the Braves. Check it out.
