5So I found your trade. I'm not too familiar with all the players on the Braves, so I'm wondering who Ian Anderson is and Grissom. Could they help the Mariners? Well I did see Ian Anderson is a starting pitcher, he seems average but since he's 24 I'm sure he could get better and lower his era. He has a decent amount of strikeouts, so they Mariners could use him. Haniger will be a free agent next year so his trade value isn't that big and he's injured which lowers his trade value even more, but when healthy, Haniger is very good at hitting and has a great throwing arm. Grissom plays third base and this should help the Mariners find a potential franchise third basemen once Suarez leaves. My only issue is I've heard the Braves farm system isn't the greatest right now, but that's only what I've hear from sites like Baseball America that rank the farm systems. Kelenic might not be the greatest hitter, but he can play defense and also has a good amount of speed. If Kelenic can step up, the Braves could have a very dangerous outfield in Harris and Kelenic. Those are my thoughts on the trade, I'm not sure if I missed anything else on this trade besides Ozuna, but I think it's a good trade that could help both sides.
So I did some further research on Grissom and Waters, and they seem like good prospects. While hitting isn't the biggest thing Waters has, he has a graded 60 arm and graded 60 field and is quick too. He could be good for the Mariners. I noticed he had 28 stolen bases in 2021 and 163 hits in 2019 which are promising. Waters plays outfield so it wouldn't hurt as much if we lost Kelenic because we would still get an outfielder in return. Grissom had some excellent stats and for an 11th round pick, he's been outstanding. Even thought Grissom is a shortstop, he is really good at hitting the ball. His best year was 2021 when he batted .319 with 101 hits, 43 RBIs and had 4 triples with 16 stolen bases. Grissom would play third base for the Mariners, if Noelvi Marte doesn't work out. If the Mariners got them, they would really help them contend in future years. That was the research I've done with these players.
Cool! I hope you enjoyed looking deeper into baseball. I appreciate how you articulated your rationale and the time you put into writing it all out for the rest of us to enjoy. Good work. I like Waters. He was on fire 2nd half of last year in the Minors. Looking good in 2022. He might be a guy that comes along slower than expected. I like his frame-type/projection. I'm keeping eyes on how Grissom's season progresses. I am in love with an approach like his: see the ball, hit the ball, and show them you're fast. Speed never slumps. He's also a wizard with the glove and what team doesn't value that. Rodriguez, Jesse Winker and a ML-ready Drew Waters in CF could be rad. I posted another trade proposal that involves Jarred Kelenic AND gets the M's a CF'er that's much better than both Kelenic and Waters. If the M's are going to play like a contender now and Kelenic's shipped off, then that's the kind of trade I want to see happen for them. Let's go M's!
This trade is a call back to another between these two teams, one recently posted by Baseball Fanatics1.2. In that trade, and in the comments, Jarred Kelenic is prominently featured. So he's in this trade and for me, that's where the idea begins. If I'm the Braves and I'm taking Kelenic then I'm not planning to also have a need for outfielder Drew Waters. I don't think Waters is a fit for the Mariners but this is just how it's gotta be for me. I'm high on Vaughn Grissom. I think he's be great after Suarez and I don't know who the M's have that'd be better. The ETA here matches up for me too. Ian Anderson's the big deal in this trade. The Mariners gotta really like him, I don't know if they do, and this is my trade proposal. As for Haniger, if the M's are out of it and he's to be a FA then it's just fine for the team to scrape some value out of him. I like Mitch Haniger a lot, but right now, he's going to have to catch fire for me to feel like he'll be worth much in a trade anyways. I can be ready to move on from Ozuna. If I'm taking on Kelenic who can play in the Majors then we're gonna need to make some room going forward. I don't know how Ozuna would figure in with also getting Winker in there, but that's a 2023 problem in this scenario. The Braves don't need Kelenic but I have a reason for it. I also like Haniger and am a Braves fan, so there. I also don't cheer for Ozuna ... but I'm trying. So it's this plus balancing it out with a minimum of guys. One is Drew Waters and because overlap with Kelenic. Two, it's Grissom, because he's good, blocked by Riley, and what't the bigger plan there M's? And then it's to figure out the difference in value, which is in Ian Anderson.
So one idea for learning about other team's players is to check out Fangraphs.com. It has a ton of information about baseball. I also like the site spotrac.com. It's a great way to review some basic financial information. Ian Anderson hasn't had a great year so far, but he certainly made an impression last year. He was outstanding in 2020. Not sure what's up with him. He's streaky. Haniger clearly is a rental and a buy-low with that ankle injury. But maybe he's the magical 2022 version of those traded-for outfielders. Just like you wrote, he's a hitter and a throw-in on this deal. I added him because I cheer for the guy, I want to see him come back and be awesome, and I want that guy to be playing for my favorite team. We're both thinking Grissom @ 3B for the M's is a good thing. :) I enjoy reading Baseball America and I think they're probably right that the Braves farm system isn't well-stocked. But that's what it looks like after you traded for guys last year, recently graduated some studs, and just won the World Series. Also sanctions. That evaluation by BA is overall though, not specific to Grissom. However, there's a very recent live chat with Baseball America and Grissom is briefly discussed. He's a gutsy gamble IMO. I'm into an OF of Kelenic, Harris, and Acuna. Show me that Contreras is legit, bring back Soroka with his A-game, sign Swanson, give Olson his space, help pack Ozuna's bags, and let me know when Ozzie's ready. Rosario went to Freddie's Lasik guy, right?
