The Rays are in need of catching NOW. They don't have many viable options currently due to injury. Severino can fill that void. Yes, he's not eligible for the post season. Who cares right now? The Rays are in the hunt for a wild card spot and people heal. Severino, gives the Rays an option for the future. Chirinos is coming back from Tommy John and hasn't pitched regularly since 2020. He's headed for rehab starts right now. From what I read, he would be considered a long relief pitcher. The Brewers could use someone like that. Personally, I think this site is over valuing Chirinos at present given his recent health history. I'm sure the controllable years have something to do with it. Overall, I think this would be a fair trade given the Rays current circumstances.

Rays aren’t trading Chirinos for Severino. For one, Severino is not that good. For another, the Rays didn’t keep Chirinos on the roster for 2 years to give him away for someone below replacement value.

Everyone has an opinion. Severino is above replacement value but not by much. He's an active bat that has some framing issues. That's what he is. The Brewers thought they could replicate what they did for Omar. Since Severino had a PED suspension, that didn't happen and Victor C made himself indispensable. Perhaps the Brewers could sweeten the pot with some cash. I wouldn't give more than $300K. I can understand waiting for a pitcher to return but this guy hasn't pitched for 2 years. He's already compounded the TJ surgery with another injury. He's a health risk wild card. There's no guarantee with Yonny. The Rays are in the hunt now. What if the Rays fall out of contention because they didn't shore up their catching now? It won't matter if Yonny comes back in September. Severino is about the best they can expect for catching help without mortgaging the future AND he is available. He can play now. He can help NOW. The Brewers and Rays have been good trading partners over the past few seasons. Why not?
