1Yoan Moncada’s career at the South Side of Chicago has been anything but consistent, though the superstar upside is still brimming at the surface. In 2023, Yoan Moncada might become a bit too expensive for the Chicago White Sox, especially considering he makes $17m in 2023 and $24m in 2024 while carrying a 67 wRC+ in 2022. In this deal, the Cubs give the Sox a bit of salary relief while returning three infielders with upside. 1B Bryce Ball is showing well at AA, and still isn’t totally tapping into his power. Luis Verdugo is a versatile defender who is beginning to break out at A+ ball. And Chase Strumpf is a tweener hitter whom the Sox could potentially solve. From the Cubs side, they have money to spend and they should be taking the bet on whether they can fix Moncada for 2023. The cost is three infielders with upside but who are Rule 5 eligible at the end of the year.
