Brewers say absolutely not. Their biggest need isn't pitching, it's offense. This trade creates far more holes than it fills. Strasburg is essentially worthless. Trading his bad contract for Yelich is a loss for Milwaukee. At least Yelich has some value to the Brewers as a leadoff hitter.

You can't pay that kind of contract to a lead off hitter. Again, Yelich's contract is punitive. The Brewers need to get out from under it. As far as pitching goes, they are not going to be able to afford the Big 3. Someone needs to go. You usually have good insight but I'm sorry, you are just wrong this time.
But at least Yelich HAS value. Strasburg is just a money pit at this point. Ruiz is good but is he good enough to take on strasburgs contract AND lose their second best pitcher? If you remove Strasburg and Yelich from the equation you might have something but then again what are the Nationals gaining? They are in a rebuild. None of the players they are getting are helping them in the rebuild. Yelich's contract is much longer than strasburg's and a 29 Y/O pitcher and 2 25 Y/O former top prospects who've struggled arent really the players a rebulid needs. Especially with giving up on Ruiz, gore and Cavalli.
Those three plus Abrams, Hassell and Wood are the future core. That's the future draw for the potential new nationals ownership group. Why sacrifice the future for moderate success in the present? Does this trade do anything for the Nationals? It turns them from the worst team in baseball to a bottom 5? What about the Brewers? Sacrifice your strengths of the team for a potential catching addition and a terrible contract. Also giving up on your former MVP is never a good thing. He was the best payer the brewers have had for decades and you are just gonna throw him into a terrible contract swap? Not likely.
Woodruff being traded is definitely a possibility but I can't see the Nats being the team to make the deal. What does a 29 Y/O pitcher bring to a team whose window wont open for at least 5 years. By that point he is 34 and who knows the kind of player he will be then. If Yelich does get flipped, it's going to be in a deal that would bring them in shorter term contracts so they can free up the money to sign the big 3. Not a deal to bring in prospects and another awful contract. He has enough value that he is a servicable outfielder even if he is overpaid.
