Bad timing for this post with the Matz news. Boyle seems like he’s trending for the Pen and I’d expect to see Grove start in the Pen after his extended layoff from shoulder surgery. Ty Johnson and Hopkins might be next up at this point. The biggest problem with Wacha is probably his control, as the Rays most likely don’t want him beyond this year at $17 million per year.
Well personally I think it's a sinking ship so I wouldn't add too much right now but I think the starting pitching is okay, they wouldn't give Matz that money to be a long reliever so I think in a few weeks he'll get slid back in so he can hopefully get flipped at the deadline cause that was a confusing signing to begin with. Right now they have Rasmussen, McClanahan, Martinez, Jax, and Englert, with Matz, Boyle, and eventually Grove waiting not counting the group of guys like Seymour and Scholtens that can start and they get Pepoit back next year. Then you got Hopkins, Johnson, and anyone they pick up in trades at the deadline so I wouldn't add anymore starters unless its a controllable, impact starter cause I wouldn't want to waste assets when the position side is so thin at the majors and AAA/AA levels.
I’m not ready to say the season is doomed but I don’t think a WS title is in the future either. As for Matz, I agree the Rays want him to start. I’m thinking his elbow fatigue a few weeks ago is forcing a reduction in workload. Maybe he returns to starting after the ASG. We will see.
