Oakland spins their last current big trade chip for a mix of close to the bigs and further away prospects. Graceffo becomes the team’s best or 2nd best pitching prospect, Rafaela a top-100 prospect at a position of need, Liberatore and Baez are two prospects the team reportedly showed interest in during the respective draft years and Gonzalez is a live arm in a system mostly devoid of them. St. Louis acquires the best available catcher to replace Molina, utilizing the now-blocked Herrera and pitching depth to get the deal done. Irvin is included in the deal as the Cards flip high-minors potential for rotation certainty. Boston spoke to Oakland during the season about Murphy and has been fishing for a controllable backstop but doesn’t have the farm depth to acquire Murphy outright. Instead, they spin two talented pieces for a major league ready catcher in Herrera

Down vote for Oakland. The A's were connected to Baez during his Draft year and they passed on him. He's shown a ton of swing-and-miss during his limited playing time. Rafaela had a great season, unlike anything he'd ever done before, and I question whether he can repeat in the future.

Helpful, thanks - I noted the Baez interest in my comment, just drew a different conclusion in that they only passed on him with their first round pick and may have been intending to take him later on, or to take him in the first if Muncy wasn’t available. You think they’re buying too high on Rafaela here? Interested in what about his performance you don’t find sustainable

Rafaela had a .409 BABIP fueling his success in High-A, so that's a Red Flag. A 5% walk rate indicates a willingness to swing at pitches he shouldn't. A 19.8% K-rate (AA) gives him a chance to succeed but it'll be subject to the whims of the BABIP gods. I think the risk profile is too great for the 2nd best chip in the return.
