I like this deal for both sides. The Cubs take a big swing and see if they can bring Matt Brash back into a starting rotation situation as well as fix the hitting woes of Jarred Kelenic. On the Mariners side, they add a valuable switch hitter in Ian Happ who gives you plus defense in LF and a strong contact/power approach in the middle of the lineup (.271/.340/.440, 3.5 fWAR, 120 wRC+). As the Mariners look to go to the postseason again in 2023, they'll enjoy his presence on the team (as well as his unabashed love of roasting and brewing coffee.) The Mariners also bring along Nick Madrigal, who could blossom as a hitter in Seattle and could give that contact-minded presence that every team loves to have when October rolls around. Also, the Mariners return soft-contact guru RHP Javier Assad, who still has minor league options and could give valuable innings to lengthen both their rotation and bullpen for 2023.
