3Rays have a good problem this year. Their OD outfield was hit hard by injuries to start the year and that resulted in playing time for K.Misner and J.Magnum, who have responded with breakout performances. Both are capable of playing CF at a high level and both are having a ton of success at the plate, with Misner hitting 233 wRC+ and Magnum hitting 134 wRC+ to start the year. 4th outfielder Palacios returned to action last night, Deluca is expected to return in early May, and J.Lowe is expected to return in June. Rays don't have room for everyone though and opt to trade Deluca because he is more of a known commodity and easier to move. Deluca by the way was having a breakout year himself to start the season, hitting 199 wRC+ and generating 0.4 fWAR. That contrasts with the Phillies' CF position, which is currently 3rd worst in baseball with -0.4 fWAR. With Crawford a year away and not guaranteed to be good on day 1, the Phillies should be looking to bring someone in to play CF. Deluca is a solid bet for 1.5-2.5 fWAR, and could be a lot more than that if the bat stays hot (obviously not 199 wRC+ hot). The cost is high though for 5 years of Deluca, requiring the Phillies to part with last year's 2nd round pick in Burkholder plus flamethrower McFarlane.
Phillies counter for Jonathan Aranda instead of Jonny DeLuca
How does Aranda help the Phillies' CF position? How does trading a player who looks like a cornerstone at 1B/DH for the Rays help them clear out a jammed outfield? I didn't propose this trade because I have an overriding desire to see the Rays add any of the Phillies prospects, I proposed it because I thought it was a good fit for both teams. Swapping Aranda for Deluca doesn't work for the Rays, and I'm not sure it works for the Phillies either.
