8I want to reject this trade because I think Robert’s future production won’t be all that great (whether from injury or just because), but damn… how can the Rays say no to trading Isaac straight up for 3 years of Robert at $13 million per year? Morel and Spikes have no value in my mind.
Mead made the roster. Who woulda thunk it???
And Eloy accepted an assignment. That couldn't have worked out better!
Yeah, something tells me the Rays are working on a trade of Morel or Cabby. Either that or Jimenez looks around the roster and sees 3-4 DFA candidates by May.
I think Morel has value, but not very much to the Rays. With no options, lots of important home games to start the year, and no defense, it's going to be hard to roster Morel waiting and hoping for the bat to come around. I think even at a 110 wRC+, he's probably negative value with how bad his defense is. The only thing keeping him on the team is that our LF if not for him is...yup. Who knows. If Chandler Simpson is batting .350 in May again, and Morel has a 100 wRC+, I think he gets moved to the highest taker. But if the White Sox will take a couple buy low guys in Morel and XIsaac in return for paying 1/3 of Robert's salary right now, I hope Stu could find a way to make it work. At this point, what's your prediction? Baz and Mead start in AAA is my bet, and Monty has earned a spot in the pen.
The only thing keeping Morel on the team is the Rays inability to admit they were wrong on Morel. Sometimes, no matter how impressive a player’s hard hit rate or exit velocity is, he is what his topline stats say he is. In Morel’s case, that was around 110 wRC+ and 1 fWAR. Not worth Paredes by a long shot (even with Bigge and Johnson included). Why Morel isn’t even that anymore I really can’t say, but whatever the Rays have asked him to do at the plate has ruined him. He needs to get out of Tampa Bay as much as the Rays need him to leave. ———————- Prediction: Monty is a lock for OD. He’s been unhittable all ST and has been nothing but great since the transition from SP to RP. With Boyle looking playable this year in the Majors, I think the Rays would still like to trade Littel over sticking one of Pep, Baz or Bradley in Durham. If they can’t trade him (or someone else), then I give it 50-50 odds we see Pep or Baz in Durham. Pep has looked better but the Rays can pick up an extra year of control if he spends a week or two in the minors. Rays will lose Jimenez if they go with Mead for OD roster, so Mead will be sent down to Durham.
All I know is I'm glad I was right, and Morel is horrible, in spite of all that bullshit hullabaloo you were pushing about his exit velos and 2023 xWOBAs, xSLUG, Barrell percentage, malarkey etc. Look, you were right, everything pointed towards him having superstar potential, but dude sucks. 100 PA as a make or break. Right now he's Grant Balfour in his return to TB. He's a few bad outings away from being sent packing.
LOL. Win some (Morel), lose some (Auer). It’s tough predicting how guys turn out. That said, while I didn’t think Morel would become a superstar, I never thought he’d be an outright bad player. Whatever the Rays have done to him is criminal.
