why would STL do this? curious

Honestly, this is a huge return! However, I feel the fo would think they're giving up way to much. If Helsley is removed, maybe 🤔

Herrera seems like the best piece in the deal, so I'd take it from the Sox side. These Sox prospects are not deal breakers, IMO, just don't know that they are sought after enough to get this kind of deal.

I tried looking to see what it’d look like with Willson Contreras instead (and had the Cardinals sending little to no money to Boston or taking back Yoshida). I couldn’t get the model to accept a trade along those lines that also fit Boston’s current roster.

This was an attempt to look what a trade might look like if the Cardinals didn’t eat any money and Boston didn’t send Yoshida back as an offset. I don’t think Boston ownership would necessarily sign off on that based on how they have operated recently. It would however allow the Cardinals at opportunity at a true high ceiling prospect as well (Bleis). It also is based on Chaim having belief in Blaze and Nazzan. I do think the trade would be more likely excluding Helsley and Weisert. Boston may also favor sending a pitching prospect that already is on the 40-man instead of Connelly (Richard Fitts). However, it does seem that the Cardinals are limited on who they can send Arenado to. Maybe Helsley’s position and value is the sweetener to get Boston to bow out on Bregman and go this route.

I'm fully on board with Arenado over Bregman, and paying the whole contract.

I’m really curious what Bregman’s contract looks like. I think both can help Boston. For me it’d come down to whether or not an Arenado trade provides meaningful improvement elsewhere on the roster. An Arenado addition would also allow them to keep the comp pick (provided Pivetta signs elsewhere). Just signing Pivetta (for the bullpen) and Bregman provides similar value for the roster without having to give up any existing prospects. To me, this would imply that the Cardinals would have to sweeten the trade (also factoring Arenado’s no-trade clause).
