This trade won't happen. Giants aren't going to trade their 2024 first round pick less than a year after drafting him. As for the Rays, I kinda doubt Tibbs would even interest them all that much, given his "current" defensive limitations. Roupp might interest the Rays, though adding another reliever is probably not all that high on their to-do list. As is, they may have to trade a reliever or two before OD, as their Pen is almost completely full of out-of-options guys.

I mean, is it likely? No. Less likely than most of the trades on BTV? Maybe. But I don’t see where there’s a rule that the Giants would refrain from trading a year-ago first-rounder, if the price was right. I’d certainly hope they’d include him in a Luis Robert trade, for instance. For Lowe? Possible he’s not the right guy. But I’d take the risk, and approve of this, if I were Buster. ZIPS says Lowe is worth close to 3.5 wins this year, and presumably a similar # next year. I think it’d be worth it to free up Fitz for the super-utility role. And Roupp may end up a starter, no?

Rays have lots of starting pitching, but Roupp is nasty. He’ll be a starter if he’s in the right situation. Probably 7th or 8th on the Giants depth chart right now, but that could change. He could also be a swing man in a pen. As for Tibbs, I’d be willing to part with him based on the other OF’s the Giants have, and the slimmest of hopes they could sign Kyle Tucker next year. Not getting my hopes up, but that’s the dream. And I’d see Lowe as more of a 1B/DH for the Giants while leaving Fitzgerald alone at 2B. If the Rays can get a better return, fine. But Lowe is often injured and has gotten expensive for the Rays, I don’t see how this wouldn’t at least be close to getting it done on their end.

mp, you’ve declined every trade I’ve requested for Lowe, so I’m curious what you’d ask for in return if you’re the Rays and the Giants called about him?

That’s not true. I liked your Lowe for Roupp and Schmitt trade overall, and I upvoted your Harrison for Lowe and Simpson trade, even though I didn’t think it was likely to happen. If I was putting together a Lowe trade, I would ideally want a MLB ready or near MLB ready player plus a far off high upside player. Ideally, the high upside player would be a position player. An all prospect trade would work too. I doubt the Rays will trade any of their best prospects, but former top prospects who haven’t broken out (e.g., guys like Mead and Basabe (who the Giants just acquired)) should be available.

chetbrown6

Fair enough, I think certain prospects would need to raise their values this year, a guy like Rayner Arias would probably be a piece you’d like in a Lowe deal if he’s back on track after 2 broken wrists. But if he does break out in the lower levels, he’d be a hard player to ask for. If the Giants are buyers at the deadline and the Rays are willing to listen, I’ll definitely hope we can revisit these talks.

Arias should interest the Rays. I didn’t know he broke both wrists. How does that even happen?

chetbrown6

He broke the same wrist in back to back seasons😭

Well, I don’t see the point if Lowe is 1B/Dh. He’s not that much better than Wade, and they’re both lefties. I really Fitz to take some ABs from some of our OFs on the weak side of their splits. And then backup everywhere. So I’d want Lowe at 2nd.

chetbrown6

Giants are thin on LH bats, especially those with any power. It’s basically Yaz and Wade until Eldridge is ready. Then there are guys like Lee and maybe Meckler who don’t offer much, if any, thump. Wade and Lowe both miss time with injuries, so them trading off between 1B and DH makes a lot of sense to me. And Lowe could still slide to 2B from time to time. The 1 season he played more than 109 games dude hit 39 bombs. Not all that long ago. But I think Fitz is the better defender at 2B, and I think they really want to let him focus on one position rather than moving him around.
