The Padres swap Cease, a nearly 5 fWAR player last year, for Littell in 2025 (2.3 fWAR in 2024) and McLean in future years. The Padres also get 2 outfielders, one for 2024 (Taylor) and one for future years (Gilbert). This trade allows the Padres to cut some payroll in 2025, while filling holes in the present and the future. For the Rays' part, they swap Littell for high-risk, high-reward, far-off prospects at positions of need (catcher and SP). The Rays have a 6 man rotation, so losing Littell doesn't hurt them that much in 2025 with several prospects in AAA ready to make the leap. The Mets sell a little of their future for the present, but don't give up anyone they cannot afford to part with, and they land a true TOR pitcher for 2025, which they currently need.
