12Down vote for the A's. Mead has struggled to stay healthy... or hit for the Power necessary to play 1B... or defend well at either 3B or 2B.
Poor Mead. Nobody wants him. I agree with Steamer in this case. Mead already hits Major League LHP well and should hit RHP better in time. His lack of power mostly extends to HR power, but he should be a decent doubles hitter. At the end of the day, the Rays have totally screwed up his development. He needs a change of scenery and some team is going to be happy they acquired him. Not sure how I feel about Bido as the return though. The Rays have 5 LHRP in AAA/MLB already (Monty, Cleavinger, Rock, Seymour and the recently acquired Eisart), and don’t really need another; although Bido (and his 2.72 xERA) would be nice to have.
Bido pitches with his right hand. Even if I agreed with Steamer on Mead's bat, I don't agree with the above 3B/2B classification.
So he does. As for Mead, he's not a slick fielding defender and he never will be. 3B seemed too much for him. I do think he can handle 2B though. Not sure if the A's need him and I'm not pushing this trade, but I do think Mead can be a solid 1-2 fWAR infielder. @JohnBitzer - Bido is a Righty.
LRP = Long Relief Pitcher
Correct!
See grover's comment below. We use LRP for long relief/swingman/back-end starter types.
The Bulk pitcher! Gotcha.
Bido is a 29 year old rookie with a 4.6 xFIP. You think he's highly sought after? This is a good trade for all parties. Steamer thinks Mead has a 109 wRC+ in 2025, and is a big improvement over their current 3rd baseman.
A 109 wRC+ at 1B would be 5 points under what Tyler Soderstrom produced last season. While that would be a boon at 3B, Mead isn't good defensively at the hot corner. And Bido flashed mid-rotation upside before ending the year on the IL. Even if you aren't buying that potential (he is 29, although technically not a rookie in 2024) he's still a viable big league SP making league minimum and has a Milb option remaining.
Mead has never played first base as a professional. Not sure why you believe him to be a first baseman. If the Rays are comfortable with him as a 2b and 3b, that's what he is. The A's are bad defensively at virtually every position. Not sure why they'd draw the line at Mead, but be content with poor defense at C, CF, SS, LF, RF... basically everywhere but 2nd base.
The A's think they'll upgrade defensively at SS with Wilson. Gelof struggled with his bat, not the glove, and I don't think the A's are ready to give up on what they saw from him in 2023. That the Rays have a lower standard for 3B defense than the A's have is their business. LF will get better once they can move Kotsay over and maybe Butler gets to Average with a bit more polish.
