3The Cardinals have a logjam in their infield with DeJong, Edman, and Gorman all vying for middle infield positions, with Donovan being a super-utility guy too. Unless the Cards want to cut ties with DeJong, which could be a tough task given his contract, Edman might pull more of a return for them. The Mariners are in need of a second baseman, and Edman would seamlessly fit that spot, providing solid defense and a good bat-to-ball skills that they thought Frazier was going to give them in 2022. The Mariners are seemingly all-set at catcher with the presence of Cal Raleigh and the Cards have a hole to fill at catcher with Yadi retiring. While Ford wouldn’t start right away, the Cards could sign a short term stop gap like Christian Vazquez and stash Ford in the minors. The Red Sox could also use an outfielder and the Cardinals also have somewhat of a logjam in the OF as well, with Dickerson, Nootbar, O’Neill, Carlson, and Jordan Walker knocking on the door. O’Neill could be the odd man out and would provide Boston with a solid bat and defense in RF. They would have to give up a pitcher like Tanner Houck, who has proven to be highly effective albeit somewhat wild, when healthy, and could fill a rotation spot or add a good arm in the pen. To fill in the rest of the talent, the Mariners and Red Sox would add in some additional young but promising prospects, with Penn Murfee being thrown to the Red Sox. This is a deal that could work for all three teams.
Houck is basically un tradable given that he Injured a disc on August 2, 2022 and missed the remainder of the season and then Underwent lumbar discectomy surgery in September. I doubt the Cardinals (or any team) are interested.
I don’t see Houck as un-tradeable at all. He’s expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of Spring Training. He’s 26 years old, isn’t a free agent until 2028, and his pitches have been consistently elite when it comes to vertical drop and horizontal break. A lot of teams would love to have him, despite the surgery.
