1This trade does multiple things for both teams. It opens up 3 40 man roster spots for LA and saves them about $20 mill in salary. They are going to need 40 man spots once Sasaki and possibly Kershaw are added and they have several arms that will need to be added mid season when Sheehan, Gratarol, and maybe another pitcher comes off the 60 day IL. They also have Miller, Knack, Frasso, Hernandez, etc, etc, etc to backfill any SP or RP in case of injury. Both Ryan and Hurt might not even be able to pitch until 26, so they won't even miss them. Taylor is in his walk year and has a contract that is about $15 mill underwater so here is where the savings come into play. The Tigers get a RH hitter, although with many offensive warts, that can play anywhere on the field on a short term deal that would give Hinch a lot of versatility off the bench for a very nice 2nd base prospect where they have lots of depth. I expect LA to also move Brasier and maybe ,Gonsolin, May, Stone or Vesia once Kopech's possible injury gets resolved but the Tigers probably wouldn't be interested in short term expiring contracts to spend prospect value on, thus the injured Ryan and Hurt make more sense.
