I like the trade for all parties. The White Sox add some pretty good prospects to their system, including 1 top 100 prospect (Taylor) and 1 pitching prospect that could be on the list within 1-2 years (Suarez). The Reds add a legit major leaguer to their outfield (Robert), with enough cash to make it work for their books. They also get a former top 50 prospect best suited to play 3B who needs a change of scenery (Mead). The Rays swap 6 years of Taylor for 5 years of McLain, at a cost of two players who don't figure into their future (Mead and Basabe) and a top pitching prospect the Rays can afford to part with (Suarez).

I believe that you were disparaging Mead in a similar deal a few days ago? Reds do not need Mead. Robert's injury history has hurt his trade value. He would benefit the Rays more so than the Reds.

Mead is a great addition to the Reds. The Reds infield is absolutely awful. Noelvi Marte is projected for a .296 wOBA as the starting 3b. Mead is projected for a .312 wOBA.

Wouldn't it be nice if the kid could get a chance to play for the Rays...?

Shhhh!!! I'm trying to convince this guy to take our shitty player!!! I could DFA Mead at any point. In fact I would have. I would have DFA'd him, and added Bob Seymour. I'm shocked Seymour didn't get picked in the rule 5 draft. Mead has a 117 and 123 wRC+ in his last two AAA seasons, which encompasses over 700 PA, so not a small sample. Those numbers aren't bad, but they're not good either, especially for someone who is such a liability in the field and on the bases. And his 225 Major League plate appearances, he only has five extra base hits and can't draw a walk. His two home runs were squeakers, he's slow as molasses, and plays the worst infield defense this side of the Mississippi. I'm moving him for whatever I can get for him in spring training, because I think he's a wasted roster spot But for those wanting to trade for him, these are internal discussions that you aren't privy to, so as far as you know, I think Curtis Mead is a fantastic baseball player worthy of accolades and endorsements only reserved for the upper echelon of all young talent.

To which I say (1) The Rays had to have some misgivings on Mead when he was a top 50 prospect and worth $35MM trade value. Why didn't they move him then, even for less than $35MM? (2) Why the heck were the Rays engaged in talks to sign him long term 2 years ago? (3) Whatever else he may be right now, he would probably benefit from being called up for extended playing time without having to worry about being sent down, and he hits LHP well (better than scrubs like D.Carlson who the Rays traded for last year). He's not a total lost cause generally, but he is with the Rays. Time to move him.

Yeah, EDLC and McLain are "absolutely awful." That is why you keep cooking up these multiple misaligned proposals to deal for one of the Reds awful infielders... McLain.

With all due respect, Mr. Oatmeal and Mr. mp, you both cook up proposals to deal for other teams quality players while always offering sub-standard Ray players. And, then BS how you are doing the other team a favor.

That's right Doofus, all my posts are about how bad McLain is.

Doofus - Most of my trades this offseason have centered around Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe from the Rays in return for prospects. Now, maybe you think Diaz and Lowe suck but they are likely to both be 2.0 - 4.0 fWAR players next year and they have 2 years of control each at around $11MM annually. They are hardly substandard. Most teams would be better with them, and my two favorite trade partners for these guys - Mets (Diaz) and Mariners (both players) - have huge holes these guys would fill. So in the future, don’t throw a general insult my way. Instead, post your thoughts to my specific trades so we can discuss. That is what makes BTV fun for me anyway, the discussion part.
