I feel like the Rays come out of this pretty unscathed. It costs them their 2nd base 1st base prospects, their 3rd or 4th most likely to get 3b/1b reps, and a decent pitching prospect with a low ceiling but a high floor. In return, 5 win SS/CF. Yep, the Rays feel like bandits. The Marlins take on dead salary and move an arb eligible OF. They love their return. The Reds get their big bopper for the OF, and a former top 100 prospect 3rd baseman/2b to take over at one or the other.

I can’t see the Reds doing this. They give up the best player and don’t get anywhere near the best players in return.

Yeah, I don't know. I have thought the Marlins, A's, Blue Jays, and anyone else with money to spend that won't make the playoffs should take on some bad contracts in exchange for good prospects. This frees up $20 million worth of dead money for the reds. My thought was that enables them to sign Alonso or Santander, get back two young good players at positions of need, and its only costing them their backup shortstop.

I like the premise, but I think the Reds are more likely to pair 2-3 lower value prospects with Candelario than with a hig value player like McLain. I also don't think Sanchez and Mead are all that good. Sanchez is basically a league average bat and ok defense. Teams need guys like that but they aren't starters on good teams. Mead hits LHP well, but he has yet to hit RHP well and his defense is subpar. Regardless of the cash savings, this trade hurts Cincinnati.
