1The Yankees should be tempted by this trade IF and ONLY IF they sign Roki Sasaki. If they do, Schmidt (who would be the 6th starter for the Yankees) becomes expendable. Peraza is out of options and with Arenado on board, he wouldn't make the 26-man roster anyway. Stroman is a pure salary dump. In terms of the Yankees financial picture, this trade will get them under the top tax threshold in 2025, with room to sign Roki and possibly Tim Hill (left-handed relief). The Cardinals get a good low-cost starter with 3 years of control (Schmidt). Peraza likely has a better chance of starting for the Cardinals than with the Yankees. Stroman likely can pitch near-league-average innings as a #4 or #5 starter. No luxury tax implications for the Cardinals. Payroll increases by ~$12M in 2025.
