2The Orioles get exactly what they need, and spend next to nothing to get it. McClanahan is a top 5-10 SP in baseball when healthy, and all accounts say he is healthy. Yandy's been better than Pete Alonso by wOBA and wRC+ for the last 3 years. The Rays should be rebuilding for when they are no longer playing JV to a minor league team. The former #1 overall prospect goes a long way towards parting with 3 years of McClanahan. The Rays have excellent IF options, but experience tells me you can never have enough guys capable of playing SS.
I originally thought this was a pretty good trade for both parties. My only question is whether the Rays should be acquiring guys with only 5 years of control remaining when their next window doesn’t open for another 1-2 years? I don’t see any big extensions happening while Franco’s salary remains on the books or while the stadium issue remains unsolved, so the Rays might be looking to trade Holliday and Kjerstad around the time they start getting good again.
