Damn it, Forst...

On the surface, it looks like another way to take on salary to avoid a grievance. That said, they should not be trading away longer-term future value for shorter-term value at this point in their rebuild.

Is it possible to move the discussion thread from Grover’s post into this post?

No, sorry

No, they shouldn't. And if even a portion of the rumors are true then both Bellinger and Montgomery have been shopped as basically salary dumps this winter.

I don't know that the A's gave that much upside away (except for the pick). And they can always trade Springs at the deadline. Heck, maybe it's not even all that short-term for the A's? If Springs is reasonably productive and healthy, they could keep him and exercise the club option for a third year, which will be a dirt cheap $15 million. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong.

You’re not looking at it wrong. The A’s traded prospect potential for returning to health potential in Springs. If I was a betting man (and I am), the A’s will probably love this trade come the Deadline, but may hate it (I hope) in 2-3 years. As a Rays fan, I hate it today.

I can see why. I think you're right; this is basically a salary dump by the Rays.

Why do I feel that we are all missing something from the trade of the pick? Are there other implications or does it alter anything else, to either team?

I don't think we're missing anything, but I don't know for sure.

This trade seems like a salary dump for the Rays. They are trading a #3 pitcher (maybe better than 3 if he fully returns to form from TJS) and getting back a draft pick I have zero confidence in the Rays to use properly (e.g., their last two 2nd picks in the draft were no power Emilien Pitre and no bat Adrian Santana, when there were a ton of better options still available), a couple no control pitchers who the Rays might be able to fix with their brand of pixie dust, and another 1B prospect (which the Rays are drowning in). In short, the Rays are getting back no “sure things” to improve their team in return for their #3 pitcher and that ain’t great. If Springs recovers anywhere near to his pre-TJS level, he’s a $25MM per year pitcher with $40MM in surplus value. Rays should have held on to him til the Deadline.

How would you feel about the trade if you were guaranteed to love who the Rays draft? (No promise that the guy makes it to the Show, though.)

I would like the trade more but I still feel the Rays made a mistake of moving Springs today for $15MM when he could be worth $30-40MM (ie: a top 100 prospect) in July. I know there are no guarantees in life but Springs put up better than Eovaldi numbers in his return to pitching last year and Eovaldi is worth $25MM per year. Springs at his peak is better than Eovaldi.

I’ll take the Eovaldi that pitched in Boston over the Springs that pitched in Boston. 😀

LOL. That seems so long ago. Springs being a failed reliever.

At the moment it's Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. My 5 year old sings it nonstop.

I like the A’s trading the pick because they have to give up their third pick pick with severino signing and since they can trade their comp A they move down 5 slots or so in draft and lose third round pick not second

Is that how it works? Or do they lose their third pick at the time of the signing?
