If Breslow Signs Burnes, Santander & McCann FIRST 👍, if not 👎

I’d love to hear your logic for that statement.

I see absolutely no reason to trade for 1yr of Cease if that’s all they’re going to be able to get done (other then backup Catcher & RP’s) especially with Snell, Fried & Eovaldi already off the board. It’s beginning to look like nothing has changed in Boston (again) but there is still time. Sign Burnes, Santander & McCann then make this trade, I’d be happy enough. Disappointed they missed on Soto but 2 SP’s should be the priority, an Ace and a #1 would be nice but it has to be at least a #1 and a #2 for it to be a successful off season to me. Cease is going to get BIG $$$ to extend. 10yrs $400m? Got to trade for him before the season starts though, unless the QO is $40m next year I really doubt he’d accept, so a team could attach the QO and get the pick. So is trading for 1yr of Cease and the compensation pick worth trading 5yrs of Abreu and Romero who doesn’t need to added to the 40 man roster or need protecting from the rule 5 draft until November ‘26? If the rest of the team is built for a run the answer is yes, if the team is not built for a run then the trade gets rejected. The genus of 1 woman’s logic.

Depends on your definition of making a run. Red Sox only need to improve by about 5 wins to reach the playoffs and with both the Yankees and Orioles having disappointing off-seasons so far, the division title could be up for grabs. Cease helps that cause a lot.

I don’t think the team is currently built for a run (even with your assessment of the Yankees and Orioles having disappointing off-seasons so far) or has improved by 5 wins, and don’t believe adding just Cease and subtracting Abreu accomplishes either, so this trade should be rejected but hopefully revisited.

I’m disappointed, but might as well go ahead and trade for Cease

Last month the Red Sox were telling folks they wanted to sign 2 of the big name free agent pitchers (Snell, Fried and Burnes) and so far they’ve not been a player in either of the Snell or Fried signings. This trade at least gets them one legit SP. For the Padres, trading Cease sucks but it kills two birds with one stone. It cuts net payroll by almost $10MM and fills a COFposition long term. Plus, Littell is a pretty good 1 year make-do option, as he put up 2.3 fWAR last year. For the Rays, Littell is the odd man out in their current 7 man rotation and is swapped for 3 prospects.
