6Mariner fans: Help me understand how this trade is a negative for you. It upgrades the offensive profile at 1B and and infield spot for the cost of one prospect, while maintaining the best rotation in baseball.
Cole Young profiles to be pretty darn good offensively; certainly more upside than Hoerner. The Cubs side is probably fair; although I don't like it for the Cubs. This is the type of return the White Sox should be asking for.
Great for WS, pretty risky for Cubs, and not very appealing for the Mariners.
I think it's a pretty creative trade. I also think it's a slight overpay for the Cubs, and I would counter with 2 lesser prospects for one of the outfielders.
Quite honestly, this trade would be better served to remove Vaughn. Mariners fans want absolutely nothing to do with him, so my guess is that is why you are getting such negative feedback on that side of the trade. Making it Arroyo + Evans would be better I think than sending Young to CWS.
The salient question is: why would the Mariners want to give up six years of cheap control of a near-MLB-ready second baseman for two years of a pricier league-average one whose carrying tool is his glove? The Mariners system is pretty deep up the middle, they have cheap guys like Bliss and Moore to stopgap them, and Young is one of their two best prospects – a top 50 prospect in the MLB. They could get a lot more for Young with another partner than this trade offers. Meanwhile, Vaughan doesn't have much appeal, and would likely play even worse in Seattle's home park.
