9Velazquez won't work for the Rays. They are already 4-5 deep at 1B (depending on whether you include Y.Diaz in that depth chart), and the 4 prospects are all LHBs. Velazquez might not even rank in the top 3 of that group, as both X.Isaac and T.Morgan are arguably top 100 prospects (Isaac for sure) and Aranda is a former top 30 prospect in the Rays system who is having success in the Show, despite missing much of last year with an assortment of minor injuries. Chourio would make infinitely more sense for the Rays as the headliner. Also, the Rays would never trade Pitre only a few months after drafting him. That's not how the Rays operate.
Pitre screams Guardians to me with the way he hits and whatnot... Cleveland would have to cut/trade someone hence why it was essentially a Freeman/Pitre swap at the end there. Though the Guardians peeps don't want Pitre, but his profile fits what Cleveland normally gets. Cleveland isn't the type to trade a guy right after drafting either...
I split my reply in two... problem is Velazquez is really the only top prospect Cleveland can afford to move for someone who doesn't have long term control... Plus maybe the Rays could try to switch him back to catcher? He was originally a catcher, but Guardians won't play someone at catcher unless they feel they will be at league average or better in the bigs (Aka Yainer Diaz didn't meet these requirements for Cleveland)
I didn't think Velazquez ever played catcher before being drafted though, and the Guardians ended that experiment quickly. Rays value defense in their catchers more than offense, so I don't think he will work as a catcher for the Rays either. A Lowe trade to Cleveland may not be in the cards.
He did play some catcher, but that was a high school level, so hard to represent much at that level... I mean he is going to hit AA at age 20 because of his bat...I just don't see anyone else of note that would be available for Lowe personally
Why not keep Velazquez at 1B and send the Rays Kayfus to play LF for the Rays?
Cleveland has a nice farm, but their upper minors is thin... Guys are running out of options as well and with Naylor and Thomas being a free agent after the season, they will need replacements. DeLauter has one spot, but has injury issues, Kayfus is projected to replace Naylor so on paper... I just logistically don't see Cleveland moving Kayfus when his eta fits into an empty slot on the big league roster and the organization as a whole... Velazquez is a guy who, is advanced for his age, but can likely be replaced and 1B is the easiest position to statically find a bat to play.
Is Manzardo not in the picture? Hitting 98 wRC+ in his rookie year doesn’t exactly scream bust to me.
That's the odd thing about him, yes he's in the picture, but he hasn't been playing any 1B... He's been straight DH... At the moment I have to place him not as the 1B but the DH...
