5Phillies get a platoon bat and defensive replacement for Castellanos, a closer, and some salary relief. Giants need to plan for 2026.
Offloading Walker isn't worth the cost of Painter to a a team that is as willing to spend money as the Phillies are. And getting Painter isn't worth absorbing Walker's contract. It would be more sensible to offer Walker and half of his contract balance to a non-contender with a young rotation the might benefit from a veteran presence and the capacity to help eat innings. The return could be minimal -- even cannon fodder to fill out a minor league roster.
Okay, the benefit to the Phillies is clear, but why on earth would the Giants take on Walker and his contract if rthey're planning for '26....or any other year?
To get Andrew Painter
How else can they get Painter if they don’t take on the upside down contract of Walker?
