1This trade only benefits the Rangers. Smith is a ok player but he can’t play SS and would just be another body added to the already too large group of non-SS infielders the Rays have. On the other hand, Ras is a proven #3 SP (or better) who also can be an elite closer if needed and he’s only expected to get paid $5MM over the next 2 years. He has low trade value because of injury risk but that doesn’t mean the Rays are looking to trade him for a healthy “does nothing to improve the Rays” player. Rays aren’t stupid. They know the demand for Ras at the deadline (if he’s healthy) could easily return them a difference making prospect. They hold off trading him til then.
