4Doval throws hard but walks too many batters to be an elite closer, which is what Cubs need, more than Max Fried, or any of the players that they have been connected to so far during the off-season. Before I give up on Wicks, I would like to see him pitch healthy for a full season. Cubs would be wiser to go hard after Tanner Scott, or sign Clay Holmes than make this deal.
Hoerner is definitely available. But he's hurt, so Cubs would have to discount him. I don't see that happening. Doval, by the same token, needs to reestablish his value. Throws 100, which is hard to ignore. I just don't see a fit at the present time. Maybe at summer trade deadline.
Think I would go for this, as a Giants fan, if Canario were known for his defence. Also, the fact that he’s out of options makes it a no-go. But I do like the basic idea of trading Doval for SP depth plus some other need.
Giants need a SS, so I wonder if the Cubs would trade them Hoerner for Doval. They have Swanson and Matt Shaw coming up. Giants have no need for Canario.
