Cubs trade a bunch of players who seem to have no role in the organization for potential closer and platoon catcher.

Mj hasn't been a catcher for over a full season now. Been strictly in the outfield for about 2 1/2 years now. Not really sure why this would make any sense for either team.

The only reason MJ hasn’t been a catcher the last 21/2 years is Salvador Perez. The scouting reports on his defense were positive and he had a plus arm. As a MLB outfielder he doesn’t hit for enough average, but as a backup catcher-DH type he becomes more valuable. Harvey would be the best pitcher in the Cubs bullpen. So that explains why the trade makes sense from the Cubs perspective. Hernandez and Davis are past top 100 prospects. Davis has been snake-bit with injuries, but has produced when healthy. Hernandez seems to have found his stride. He was also a huge International signing and drew comparisons to A-Rod, but he is behind Jefferson Rojas in Cubs system. Canario and Mervis have raked in the minors, and it is criminal that neither has been given a chance to play, especially in light of the Cubs last 2 disappointing seasons. Miller was outstanding for the Cubs but is more a middle reliever than a closer. Royals have Erceg. So basically Miller replaces Harvey in set up role. So the Royals increase their depth and may discover a star, or two, in the deal. Hopefully, you can see the rationale. You don’t have to agree with it, but to imply that it is nonsensical speaks more to your knowledge of the players than to the trade proposal.
