Nationals want middle of the order bats this offseason (like everyone else), so they take advantage of a regrouping Rays team that doesn’t figure to be playoff bound next year to snag Y.Diaz. Diaz is coming off a down year because of an awful start to the year, hitting 120 wRC+ for the year but 134 wRC+ after April. He only costs $10MM and is controllable for 2 more years. If I was looking for a 1B, and the Nationals should be, I’d prefer Diaz for 2/$20 over Alonso at $150-200MM all day long, seeing as how they have similar production. In return for Diaz, the Rays get prospects at every position. Chaparro steps in as the Rays’ sole RHB at 1B, and Lile, Sykora and Bazzell get added to the best Farm in baseball. Rays will be back in 2026, but 2025 won’t be their year.

Highly doubt the Nationals would even consider Sykora straight up for Diaz, I think internally the 3rd rounder is viewed considerably higher then his value is listed here.

Yeah, that wouldn't surprise me. I wanted a high upside pitcher that was at least 2 years out, but I probably overshot what Diaz can return. Susana and Clemmey would be fine too, but they have even higher trade values on BTV and are probably equally untouchable. The problem is that after those 3 (and Cavalli if healthy), the rest of the Nationals arms lack the elite tools I'd want in the headliner.
