5Two thumbs down for Milwaukee. This would be a great trade for the Red Sox and a very, very poor one for the Breweers. They are well stocked with outfielders and don't need another. Mayer is just too far from the big leagues. He won't help until 2025, if then. Houck isn't anywhere close to Burnes' value. If the Brewers did this it would signal they are giving up on the 2023 and 2024 seasons and into complete rebuild mode. Their GM has stated that's not the case.
Houck is basically un tradable given that he Injured a disc on August 2, 2022 and missed the remainder of the season and then Underwent lumbar discectomy surgery in September. Houck is still in Boston rehabbing from his back surgery. Doing well, heading home soon. I doubt that any team would be interested. He will have to pitch in games in ‘23 & prove himself effective & healthy before he would be considered to be traded for by any team. And then if he is healthy & pitching well, the Red Sox won’t move him. Nov 4 ‘22 Rafaela news; Rafaela is working out with Team Netherlands right now during their “Kingdom Series,” which is essentially a camp in preparation for the World Baseball Classic in March. Criollos de Caguas in the Puerto Rican Professional Baseball League confirmed that Rafaela will join them next Wednesday (yesterday). He’s on a similar path that Casas was last year, he’s not being moved in a trade.
Rafaela seems like a guy to sell high on IMO
Mayer’s ETA is 2024 and he’s the second best SS prospect in the league. Swap Houck for Bello, and throw in another prospect. I think you undervalue Mayer for two seasons of Burnes. The Brewers could contend in ‘23 & ‘24 but they won’t match teams like the Astros, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, etc. Maybe it’s not this deal, but keeping Burnes to save face with the fanbase and then letting him walk is going to sting when they don’t win a World Series.
Mayer might see Boston in ‘24 but I don’t think it will be until September
