TB doesn't trade for guys at their peak value like Gilbert, that's a lot to give up for a guy that could get TJS and be lost for '24 and '25, they would trade Eflin and Diaz in separate deals for several younger prospects.

Agree 100% on the Rays don’t trade for peak value guys, particularly pitchers. This trade makes no sense from the Rays perspective for other reasons too. Why swap Eflin for Gilbert in the first place? What in the world would the Rays do with France, as the only reason to trade Yandy is to open a roster spot for Mead, Aranda or JC.

I get that it is very unrealistic to trade two of your top players while you're contending. My main thought here was that the Rays are at their the highest payroll in years by a large margin and that payroll was mostly constructed when they were expecting three other young cost controlled stars (Franco, Rasmussen and McClanahan) to be plying this year. Both Eflin and Diaz are at peak value, older and expensive compared to payroll size. Eflin going down for TJS would make for a dead contract worth 10-20% of payroll, Gilbert would be half that and still under team control after coming back from TJS. Gilbert and France are downgrades, with upside, that would keep them competitive at a much lower cost and allow them to sign younger players to long low cost deals. Plus if the Rays can help Gilbert improve the way they helped Eflin, then he'll be an amazing steal.

You see the big picture right, but you’re not following the Rays Way. Take France. He makes more than Diaz over the next 2 years but is a HUGE downgrade to Diaz. Plus, I’m still pissed at him running over Paredes last year. Damn dirty player. Rays have internal replacements for Diaz who are as good or better than France and who make much less money. Rays won’t want France. Gilbert might benefit from the Rays pitching managers but at $66MM in trade value, they are paying full freight for his services. That’s just not how the Rays do business. They would be more interested in guys like Woo, Brash, Montez, Celesten, etc…

You make a good point about Gilbert and not being a fit for the Rays style. Where do you get your salary info? Fangraphs is showing France as $6.8m in 2024 + Arb next year and Diaz at 8M 2024 + 10M 2025.+ 12M club option in 2026. Which still not a huge savings for the performance gap, but that's what having one of the M's top prospects was supposed to help overcome. I didn't see the Paredes play, but that makes me hope the Mariners get rid of France even more. Sounds like he might be a good fit for the Astros.

Whoops. I made a mistake with salary. I got France's salary by looking at the salary info in the BTV system (it's in the trade proposal above), and I went off memory with Diaz. For some reason I thought he was earning $8MM per year. You're correct he's earning $18MM the next 2 years, which if BTV is correct for France, they are earning the same.
