10Milwaukee has no use for a very lite hitting utility infielder. Mazur got knocked around pretty good in AA. The Brewers would rather keep Weimer and use him in a much better deal.
BigBat: I believe you are the one who has no idea what he is talking about! You obviously don't know much about the Brewers. They traded Burnes to get Ortiz (who is a plus, GG caliber fielder) to play shortstop IF they don't extend Adames. The Brewers really struggle against LHP and Arias would need to be platooned against lefties, further decreasing his value to Milwaukee. Read what jmont said about Weimer. Milwaukee would rather keep Weimer and use him in ANOTHER DEAL.
BigBat was pointing out what jmont said about Arias was incorrect since he does hit the ball hard and is a very good defensive SS... He's not a light hitter... Now when it comes to Weimer in a different deal, that I can agree with since Brewers did pick up a solid SS prospect in the Burnes deal... He wasn't wrong about Arias being a good fit to replace Adames IF not extended. I feel like Arias has a higher ceiling but way more risk than Ortiz...
That would be an accurate assessment Coach. Ortiz isn't in the realm of Arias when we're talking potential, and anyone that suggests Arias is "light hitting" doesn't know their "you know what" from a whole in the ground.
OK, cool! Ortiz is your answer then. LOL I love it when geniuses make final decisions on a 23 yr old's single season stats that is a small sample. Especially when those numbers haven't existed in previous seasons, but you do you.
Big Bat says, "Ortiz isn't in the realm of Arias when we're talking potential" He also says, "I love it when geniuses make final decisions on a 23 yr old's single season stats that is a small sample" Well, I decided to look at some facts. I think it's fair to say that when a person looks at potential, a good place to start is at the AAA level. Let's do that with Arias. Arias in AAA for 2 years with 724 AB's. Ave: .267 OBP: .333 SLG: .435 OPS: .768 Ortiz in AAA for 2 years with 453 AB's. Ave: .327 OBP: .383 SLG: .521 OPS: .904 It is my opinion that this good sample size would be a good indicator that Ortiz is definitely in the realm of Arias when it comes to potential. I will also acknowledge that both players are good on defense. I hope both have great careers.
Yeah, factor in the season he had a broken hammate bone. That's sound logic. Don't factor in age and level either because that would be dumb. Ignore the fact that Arias never played a single inning in AA either. Ignore the fact that as a 21 yr old who skipped AA, went straight to AAA and hit 284/348/454/802 in a large sample size. Ortiz is nowhere near Arias and any scout worth anything will tell you that immediately. That doesn't mean Arias is a surefire AS or anything. It means there is more potential there that a guy like Ortiz can't match. Much in the same way that Rocchio cannot match Arias' potential and why Arias is Cleveland's starting SS for the time being. You want to compare Ortiz to someone then Rocchio would be a good one. Although again, Ortiz was significantly older than Rocchio at each level. I wouldn't look at the prospect rankings between Rocchio and Ortiz though. You won't like them. I would invite you to go to Youtube, type in Gabriel Arias highlights 2023 and watch the ball come off his bat. Watch his homers, where they are hit and who he hit them off of. There are few hitters in the league with that type of easy power. He needs to be more consistent in getting to it and correct the LHP issue he had last year only. He does that and you're looking at one of the most valuable SS in the league. If he doesn't you're looking at another Willy Adames. Slightly less hit tool with slightly better defense.
Thanks for your reply. Good for Arias, and you should be his agent. My point was simply based on a good sample size of AAA stats, Ortiz has the potential to be in the "realm" of Arias. Sorry if that upset you. It's like arguing who got the best bike for Christmas. If you like yours better, that's alright with me. As I said, I hope they both have great careers.
He's not a light hitting INF though... Arias hits the ball hard, he just struggles against left handing pitching... He absolutely destroys right handed pitching. He would be able to replace Adames easily for you guys... Though personally I don't think this deal is enough from Weimer...
Good Lord! You have no idea what you're talking about. No, the Brewers would not rather keep Weimer and Arias would easily replace Adames and make dealing him an easy choice. If anything, the Guardians have no use for an 18 yr old prospect that is an overhyped long shot just like Turang was. Cleveland isn't dealing Arias because he's 24 yrs old today I believe and he has elite power along with GG caliber defense. He also happens to be their starting SS and it is blatantly obvious he is the best option at SS defensively speaking. We don't need to mention his power potential.
