This trade would also be predicated on Blake Snell coming to agreement with the Mariners on a long-term deal. Essentially swapping out Castillo's salary for Snell's salary after 2024. This deal would open up $16M in available money, while Seattle is said to have $10-15M left they can spend. The $26-31M would be more than enough to sign Snell, even leaving room for midseason additions should they back load it slightly. Possibly giving Snell $16M in 2024, and then $22M for years 2025-2029. Sure it's a hometown deal, but the Yankees only offered $150M/6 years versus this deal which would be $126/6 years. Considering NYC has a 29.4% higher cost of living, their offer in Seattle would be like $105/6 years or $20M less in total value. It's also worth pointing out that he wouldn't need to maintain two homes as his offseason house in Seattle could become his full-time residence, which is worth quite a bit by itself. Jake McCarthy looks like a guy who could have a sneaky good year and is currently ticketed for AAA because of the D-backs signings. Castillo gives the Pirates an ace to pair with Keller atop their rotation, while McCarthy and Urias over a full season should offer similar value to Reynolds and Hayes, the inclusion of Cole Young just adds to their pool of prospects that could help as soon as 2024. The D-backs turn a NL Rookie of the Year with injury concerns and a guy blocked at the MLB level (McCarthy) into an ace starter under team control for 5-years through his prime, a past all-star with good durability who is somewhere between good and great every season, while also acquiring a prospect who has posted a .900-1.000 OPS across his first two seasons and could be a long-term replacement for Walker at first base. Sure Blake Snell and Jared Jones aren't Luis Castillo and George Kirby, but the improvement at LF and 3B, while adding some insurance in case Santos needs time on the IL, makes this a good move for the team, while they could retain $10M+ for other roster needs that arise. This also strengthens the bench for Seattle as it pushes Raley to 1B/RF, Rojas, Moore, and Canzone or Trammell to the bench.
