4Fantastic trade for the Dodgers. They give up spare parts and get one of the better SPs in the game. The opposite for Milwaukee. I don't see anything the Brewers would be excited about in this deal. Busch would be a backup 2B/1B, a bench guy who Ks a lot. Cartaya isn't going to be of any help until 2025. Too far away for the Brewers immediate needs and too big a part of this trade. Grove/Pepiot both project to be BOR starters or swing men types. Milwaukee would want more than this for Burnes.
Sorry, I should have said spare parts for the DODGERS. They are unlike almost any other team in baseball with their depth. They have one of the best catchers in baseball in Smith and don't need Cartaya. If they need another catcher they can easily go out and buy one. The Brewers and other small market teams don't have that luxury. They have no spot for Busch unless it's DH or spare outfielder. Their starting pitching is great and deep. Pepiot/Grove aren't in their top 7 or 8 SPs if you include Miller and Stone who are either ready or will be soon. The Brewers don't care about top 15 prospects if they aren't going to help them win in 2023 and 2024. The Brewers don't have the offense to stay competitive w/o very good SP. They have realistically maybe two years before most of their arby guys get too expensive for them to afford. To get Burnes the Dodgers would have to include either May or Gonsolin or Stone&Pepiot or Miller&Pepiot or Miller/Stone to start. I believe both Stone and Miller are top 2 or 3 type starters.
Not exactly spare parts -- One top 15 prospect, One top 100 prospect and two pitchers with MLB experience with 5-6 years of control for two years of Burns. Anyway how much more would Dodgers need to give up for Burns? Dave
Spare parts? I don't see the #8 overall MLB prospect as a “spare part,” but whatever. I also don't see MLB #74 (pepiot) and MLB #42 (Busch) as spare parts either. THe only real spare part going to Milwaukee in this deal is Grove, who isn't a bad pitcher by any means.
