10Easy no for the Guardians in my opinion.
Down vote for Oakland. The A's are acting like they can't/won't spend any money this winter so I'm not sure they'd be willing to buy an underwater contract. Even if they could, they aren't going to give up a draft pick to make it happen. Valera has a long track record of not staying healthy.
If they can sign Clevinger to 1/13M or 2/25M I'm all for it but I just assumed he'll get that from a few other teams. What if the A's are the only team to offer Clevinger a 3yr deal? He might be looking for the most $. As for Forst I think the A's likely stay in Oakland for the next few years but when it comes to public statments around that I take neither the team nor the city at their word. I also think if the A's sign someone to a multi year deal this offseason it'll be a good indicator that they already know where they'll be playing for '25 and possibly after. No particular order: -I'd like a trade for Matt Strahm(7.5M) + Rojas but not sure the Phils go for that -Jordan Hicks on a backloaded 4/45M and give him the Mason Miller treatment('24 bullpen '25 rotation) -Liam Hendricks 2/12M should be ready just in time for the A's playoff push -Paxton 3/35M probably gets a better deal soon but if not -Yariel Rodriguez 4/35 too much of a gamble for me but it's a decent idea There are a number of ways to get to ~$60M. Just doubt I'll like the way in which they do
https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2023/12/as-dont-expect-to-trade-paul-blackburn-seth-brown.html The A's are waiting out the market to see who falls like they do every year. Forst basically said they're going to spend $17+ mil before the season starts and I fully expect them to. The question being where and how? I'd prefer the A's use most of that money now on a 3 year deal for Clevinger but for all I know they tried and he's waiting to see if a better deal comes along. Forgot to count Gott's $1.5M+bonus so at least $15M left to spend.
Except that article came one week before the A's agreed to pay Alameda County $45 MM by May.
And you think that makes it less likely? It just makes me think Forst had to have known before he gave that interview. Stuff like that doesn't happen in a day.
Absolutely less likely. Because where are the A's going to spend $26 MM in the coming weeks?
Your basic math perplexes me. You mean on which FA's? Clevinger 3/$35M would be a nice start. Or did you mean where are they gonna find the $45M to pay to county? I don't know but if Forst said payroll is going to be higher than last year knowing that the payment to the county was soon to be announced then does it matter?
The $45 MM is going to come out of Fisher's wallet. What free agents are the A's going to spend $26 MM on? You aren't getting Clevinger for 3 years unless you grossly overpay him OR give him an opt-out after 2024. Because as Forst himself has said... not even he knows where the team will be playing after the '24 season.
