4Phillies are sick of not winning the WS after being so close for 2 years. This stacks both their SP and bullpen to go along with their stacked lineup. They give up a ton of pitching and a solid defensive and bat-ball ss. Brewers also give up a lot of short term assets to invest in the Churio years, but this would also give them an extra 20+ mil of FA this year. Marlins get involved to flip one of their LHRP for a 1 year rental at ss as they need hitting more than pitching.
I don't believe the Brewers are going to give up on winning and completely tank like this trade suggests. They are giving up too much for the return. Painter just had TJ surgery and is no help for all of 2024 and part of 2025 while he pitches in the minors. Abel is a nice prospect, but he has severe control issues, something the Brewers have been hurt by far too often in a hitters park like Milwaukee. He would need to learn how to throw more strikes in AAA before he would help in the big leagues. The Brewers don't want teenagers in any trade. McFarlane is a lottery ticket also with control issues.
Painter's TJ surgery really ruins this for me. Abel looks to have a pretty high ceiling. He strikesout a lot of guys, but the walks are problematic. McFarlane is a lottery ticket and teenagers are like lottey tickets. Way to many issues to make this worth the value the Brewers are giving up.
Jmont and Spahn, please go to fangraphs and check out the most recent prospects report for the Phillies. Yes, TJ and RP risk are here, but these are top end talents. If the Brewers were ever offered this, no way they say no. Phillies are the team that say no first out of this trio, but the temptation to win it in 2024 (before Ohtani starts pitching and before their older players start to decline) is what makes them pull the trigger
